Mark 16:15–16The command
“Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.”
These were among His last words before He ascended. Not a suggestion for a few — a command to His church. And the stakes are eternal: saved, or damned. There is no third option for the people walking past you.
Mark 6:34, 12The compassion
“Jesus… saw much people, and was moved with compassion toward them, because they were as sheep not having a shepherd.” “And they went out, and preached that men should repent.”
He looked at the crowd and was moved. Then He sent His disciples out two by two, and they preached repentance. When you look at the crowds on a busy street, what do you feel? Comfort — or compassion?
Romans 10:13–15The question
“How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?”
“Whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved” — but they cannot call on a Name they've never heard. Somebody has to tell them. Paul's answer is plain: “How shall they preach, except they be sent?” You are being sent.
1 Corinthians 1:21The method
“It pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.”
Standing on a corner with a Bible will look foolish to the world. It always has. But it's the method God chose. The fear of looking foolish is not a good enough reason to stay silent while souls pass into eternity.
